Technical University of Crete launched a new research cluster for cooperation between its various research groups and laboratories in the field of sustainable energy, renewable energy systems and energy efficiency. The main purpose of the TUC Energy Group is to:

  • Capitalize existing knowledge and results produced so far by the various research groups.
  • Support the development of interdisciplinary research in the field of sustainable energy.
  • Development of technology test platform (materials, biofuels, collectors, etc)
  • Enable the development of joint postgraduate curricula and programmes.
  • Support of the local/regional/national policy makers in Sustainable Energy issues.
  • Perform training and Dissemination in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.
  • Design of innovative products and pilot applications.

The TUC Energy Group includes one horizontal and three thematic categories. The three thematic categories are:

  • Renewable Energy Systems: new solar energy systems, environmental impact assessment, integration in the built environment, solid and liquid biofuels - 2nd and 3rd generation biofuels, integration of photovoltaics and wind turbines in the energy grid, virtual power systems, power electronics,  smart grids, monitoring and control of renewables, sustainable energy in water and sewage treatment, mechanical design and test in RES equipment and constructions.
  • Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment: passive solar architecture, bioclimatic architecture,  technologies for energy efficiency in buildings,  integration of renewables in the built environment, energy efficiency in the urban context, urban lighting, energy management systems for buildings, building automation and control, smart  cities, new energy saving materials-Phase Change Materials-Cool materials.
  • Indoor and Outdoor Environmental Quality: Thermal comfort, visual comfort and indoor air quality. Indoor pollutants. Monitoring of comfort indoors and outdoors.

Finally for all thematic categories, policy, market and legislative aspects are studied in the horizontal category.

The Cluster is managed by Dr Theocharis Tsoutsos and is formulated by the following research groups:
